Carbon Footprint
Disposable sanitary napkins are a significant but often overlooked source of plastic pollution and environmental impact. In India alone, approximately 12.3 billion disposable sanitary pads are used and discarded every year, creating about 113,000 tonnes of menstrual waste that primarily ends up in landfills due to inadequate waste segregation and disposal systems. Most commercially available pads are made of up to 90 % plastic, with the plastic content in a single pad roughly equivalent to four plastic bags. These products can take 500–800 years to decompose, persisting as microplastics in soil and water.
